With excellent teaching tailored to each pupil in small classes, we offer an outstanding Sixth Form experience. The size of our Sixth Form means we know each pupil well and can offer the individual attention needed for success.

Our tutorial system and exceptional pastoral care make for superb UCAS preparation and guidance, with bespoke preparation for courses at home or abroad. At the end of two years each member of the Upper Sixth will join former pupils in achieving places at his or her chosen universities or successful entry to the world of work. You can see a range of courses former pupils have attended in our Sixth Form Prospectus.

In the Sixth Form a more analytical and independent approach to lessons and research  allows students to get under the skin of the subjects they have chosen. In academic terms, our small classes have an important to play part in this. The staff-pupil relationship is enhanced by a university-style tutor-student relationship and rapport is noticeably strong as a result. Your child will be challenged to excel and able to progress at a pace that suits his or her natural learning style.

The enrichment programme provides essential life skills whilst sharpening the all-important aptitude for critical, independent thinking needed in the wider world. Our Sixth Formers play an active role in school activities and events; this helps to foster self-confidence, whilst the experience of teamwork is enhanced by taking on school responsibilities and engaging with younger pupils

Greater independence

To prepare for university and adulthood, your child will be able to enjoy a greater sense of independence and responsibility in the Sixth Form at HOHS.  Our separate Sixth Form facilities include a spacious common room and kitchen, a study room, careers library and separate boarding areas; Sixth Form students also have exclusive sessions in our new fitness suite.

With the Extended Project Qualification, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award, our business course, the enrichment programme and leadership opportunities, each Sixth Former is kept  busy, enthused and engaged for the whole two years – and ready for their next steps, wherever they may take them.

Facilities and Support

Our recently-refurbished Sixth Form study suites provide each year group with a pleasant and well-equipped space in which to work. In addition Sixth Formers have the use of the library, careers area and IT rooms – plus the Sixth Form common room for rest and relaxation at lunchtime and after school.

Sixth Formers are encouraged to complete work on their own laptop or one of the school computers using tools from the Google suite; this allows direct and speedy staff-pupil collaboration and helps students make the most of their time.

Staff are also there to assist with time management and the prioritisation of tasks to ensure everyone makes the most of the school day and the time spent studying at home.

Choosing subjects

Every year the school offers a wide range of A Levels and some applied subjects at the same level. Careful guidance is provided in the choice of courses so that the final selection of subjects will be of interest, play to the pupil’s strengths and ensure a suitable application can be made to the university course or career that is of interest.
