ICT

In Year 7 we aim to equip pupils with skills that will be useful to them in their school work and more generally in everyday life.

Pupils begin to learn about file management – creating, renaming and deleting folders and moving or renaming files.

They will create documents in Microsoft Word, presentations in PowerPoint, carry out desktop publishing projects using Publisher, create spreadsheets and graphs in Excel, and learn how to use the software more effectively. The pupils will also make web pages, create computer animations and produce artwork.

In Year 8 we prepare pupils for the Functional Skills exam in ICT, which is usually taken in Year 9.

Pupils continue to learn about file management – creating, renaming and deleting folders and moving or renaming files.

They will create documents in Microsoft Word, presentations in PowerPoint, carry out desktop publishing projects using Publisher, create spreadsheets and graphs in Excel, and learn how to use the software more effectively. In Year 9 we build on the skills learned in previous years to prepare pupils to take the Functional Skills ICT exam. All pupils will sit the Level 1 exam, and some will also take the exam at Level 2.

Pupils learn file management skills such as creating, renaming, compressing, moving and deleting folders.

They study Microsoft Word skills to create and format documents and make a poster or a form. They learn how to password protect a document or make it read-only.

Pupils learn to make PowerPoint presentations and print the slides in various ways.

Microsoft Excel is used to create and format worksheets and perform calculations. Pupils develop their skills in creating graphs from spreadsheets.

Pupils learn to create an e-mail and attach a document. They learn the need for accuracy in the address, a meaningful subject line and to phrase the mail appropriately for the recipient.

In addition to these skills, pupils learn about choosing software appropriate to the task, using copyrighted material, internet security and the importance of creating a good filing system on the computer.
