Years 3 – 6 Curriculum

A continued emphasis is placed on providing our boys and girls with an exciting and stimulating curriculum throughout Years 3 to 6.

English and mathematics skills are developed further with increased opportunities to use and apply skills in a purposeful way. Children are encouraged to embrace challenges that are posed for them and begin to seek further challenge for themselves.

Some areas of the curriculum continue to be taught through topics to promote relevance and interest to learning. Carefully planned school trips and outings ‘beyond the classroom’ reinforce these themes.

Lessons in French continue throughout Key Stage 2 with Spanish introduced in Year 3. These are taught by a senior school specialist language teacher. The ‘enrichment carousel’ further enhances the curriculum in Year 5 and 6. This involves a half-termly rotation of sessions in design technology, food technology, dance and drama. All of these lessons are taught by specialist staff from the senior school.

When children enter Year 6 they are further helped and prepared by staff for life in senior school. They are encouraged to become more independent as they move to other learning areas of the school such as the ICT suite, science laboratories and language rooms, with more lessons taught by specialist teachers.

Our pupils are able to receive individual music lessons from peripatetic staff in school. Concerts are performed throughout the year for family and friends to attend. Class assemblies and the annual summer production, in which all children in the Upper Prep School take part, are events not to be missed.

Throughout the Key Stage, a PSHCCE programme helps the pupils develop as individuals, covering areas essential to their personal development.

There are a large number of extra-curricular activities to choose from, including air rifle target shooting, art club, bird club, board and card games club, lego club and a wide variety of sports clubs and music clubs. We also run a Breakfast Club and an After School Club which all our Prep School pupils can enjoy.
