Senior Department (Age 11-16)
Year 7-11
The Senior School at Hethersett Old Hall School is a separate department within this thriving school. Although all pupils are assessed to ensure that they will benefit from the curriculum offered, the school is not and does not choose to be highly selective.
Maximum class sizes of 20 ensure the individual support and attention that is so important at this level of education. Years 7 to 9 allow the girls to experience a wide range of subjects including 3 modern languages, so that they can make informed decisions when choosing their GCSE options.
Although emphasis is placed on fulfilling academic potential, the school recognises that education extends beyond this and that pupils need to develop on a broad front. It is important that all pupils continue to take an active part in the learning process and develop the self discipline necessary for success in later life. As a result confidence grows and pupils develop a sense of responsibility, which allows them to contribute to the school community as a whole. A significant motivating factor is enjoyment .The senior school curriculum offers a variety of challenging opportunities and activities both in and outside the classroom, as for example in Year 9, where pupils participate in Night of the Notables, an independent research project not available in any other British school. Since the senior school production moved to the Norwich Playhouse to give participants an insight into a ‘real’ theatre, the school has gained a reputation for the high standard and professionalism of its young actors. The vast majority of pupils participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme, a significant number completing the Gold Award in the Sixth Form. See Photo Gallery for more information.
Pupils are encouraged to choose a balanced programme of study at GCSE from our extensive range of subjects. Results are consistently high with pupils gaining on average 1 whole grade higher than pupils of similar ability in similar schools. Parents should not confuse these outcomes with those represented in the league tables. All examination results need to be interpreted in context. See exam results.
